Wire-size high-speed steel chucking reamers come in standard sizes that correspond to American Wire Gauge (AWG) sizes. This ensures compatibility when inserting a wire of the same wire size into the hole created by the tool. The larger the wire size, the smaller the reamer. Right-hand spiral-flute reamers draw chips up out of the hole and are used for reaming blind holes that do not continue all the way through the workpiece. They enlarge the hole to an exact size for a precise fit when installing fasteners or other parts. This prevents damage to the reamer and the workpiece. Spiral-flute reamers leave a smoother finish on the hole than straight-flute reamers. These chucking reamers are made from high-speed steel and have a bright finish that is unaffected when their cutting edges are resharpened. The reamers' straight shank mounts to the chuck of a drill press or similar machining tool.
