Oversized taps have a slightly larger pitch diameter than standard taps. They are used to make threads in a hole before a coating or treatment is applied to the hole. Once the coating or treatment is applied, the threads will be reduced to the standard pitch diameter. The TiCN coating on these taps protects them from wear and is harder and more wear-resistant than a TiN coating.
