The TiCN coating on these taps protects them from wear and is harder and more wear-resistant than a TiN coating. High-speed steel taps provide good wear resistance in general purpose tapping applications in a range of materials. Straight-flute taps move chips into the taps' flutes but do not evacuate the chips as the taps are rotated into a hole to cut threads. They are used for threading through holes and blind holes.
